Valspar Grants
The Southwest Initiative Foundation has partnered with the
Valspar Corporation’s
“Minnesota Beautiful” program for nine years
to provide grants of paint and coatings for community improvement
projects in southwest Minnesota.
Projects receiving grants
in Fiscal Year 2006 included:
City Office Building, Atwater– Exterior painting of a historic depot building that is currently being used as the city hall and police station. |
Chippewa County Historical Society, Montevideo – Exterior restoration to refurbish five of the buildings at the Historic Chippewa City Site, a museum depicting a historical prairie village. |
City of Lynd, Lynd – Painting of the outbuildings on the site of the first Lyon County courthouse, which is now owned by the City of Lynd. The area is used for summer picnics and family activities. |

City of Tyler, Tyler – Exterior painting to update the Tyler Municipal Pool, which is currently used for open swimming, water aerobics, water walking, lap swimming, and swimming lessons. |
Danube Historical Society, Danube – Painting to restore the Danube Depot, which was one of the first buildings in Danube. It served the community for 70 years before being relocated to Olivia, and recently, the building was relocated back to Danube and will be restored to house a museum. |
Granite Falls Historical Society, Granite Falls – Exterior painting to preserve the 1940's Burlington/Northern Railroad depot as a Minnesota River State Trail trailhead facility, with the potential to house a tourism office, public bathrooms, and picnic area. |
Heritage Village, Mountain Lake – Exterior painting of three historical buildings within Heritage Village, which reflects the lives of the Mennonite and Lutheran immigrants from Russia who settled the area during the late 1800's to early 1900's. |
Lincoln County Agricultural Society, Tyler – Exterior painting of the horse barn at the fairgrounds, which is used during the Lincoln County Fair. |
Lyon County Agricultural Society, Marshall – Interior painting of the open class buildings at the fairgrounds, which are used to display quilts, handiwork, canning and vegetables, and flowers at the Lyon County Fair. |
Museum Encompassing Canby Community Area, Canby – Interior and exterior painting to refresh the Lund-Hoel House in Canby, a museum and interpretive center, which is on the National Register of Historic Places. |
Willmar Design Center/The Barn Theatre, Willmar – Exterior painting to restore the appearance of “The Shed,” which is adjacent to The Barn Theatre and used for rehearsal space and storage of props and sets. |
