Southwest Minnesota is well known for our amazing landscapes, historic farmsteads, and friendly people, but did you know our region is quickly becoming a hot spot for beer and wine?
When you think about agriculture in southwest Minnesota, you might not think about hops and grapes, but a loosening of legislation a few years ago paved the way for the surge in local craft beer and the development of hardy cold climate grape varieties by the University of Minnesota allowed wineries to flourish. Now there are 12 in our region, each unique.
“The quality and abundance of locally produced wines and craft beers have opened a new dimension in agriculture and tourism for our region,” said Southwest Initiative Foundation (SWIF) Vice President Scott Marquardt. “They also help to make southwest Minnesota the type of place where young families, new talent, entrepreneurs and businesses want to locate, invest and expand.”
This compound benefit is why SWIF invested in Brau Brothers Brewing Co. in Marshall, Glacial Ridge Winery near Spicer, Round Lake Vineyards & Winery on Round Lake, and the Historic 313 on Fourth Street building that houses
Foxhole Brewhouse in Willmar through our Microenterprise and Business Finance programs.
Began as a brewpub in Lucan, Brau Brothers is now a destination brewery on the corner of Highways 23 and 59 in Marshall with a spacious production area, a taproom that serves food along with their signature beer, merchandise, a ton of events, and even their own festival (Hop Fest, which was held in early September).
“When we take people to the hop yard, or the brewery, when they see the raw materials that make up our product, and how we make it, when they see the taproom and try our different beers, it’s a lot of fun,” said Co-founder and CEO Dustin Brau. “Beer is a social drink—maybe the social drink—people want experiences as much as they want a great, well-made beer.”
As breweries and wineries continue to up the ante with new facilities, recipes and events, and new shops pop up around them, you may be surprised to discover all there is to see and do. From tastings, tours, and special events to delicious food, live music, and gift shops stocked with unique goods, these locations should not be missed.
You’ll find locals and tourists, old-timers and newcomers, bikers and bicyclists gathering to build relationships, honor our roots, and enjoy distinct recipes that reflect our local communities.
