Grant Spotlight: MACCRAY 2180 Foundation supports academic and extracurricular activities for students

August 27, 2024

MACCRAY School District

The new school year is off to a strong start at MACCRAY School District thanks in part to grants from its local education foundation. The district serves 758 students from the communities of Maynard, Clara City and Raymond. The MACCRAY 2180 Foundation is a resource for teachers, coaches and other staff, who can submit grant requests each year to the foundation’s volunteer advisory board members.

Kids enjoy summer rec baseball wearing blue T-shirts purchased with help from the MACCRAY 2180 Foundation.
MACCRAY 2180 Foundation’s grant to the school district this year included money for summer rec T-shirts.

Here’s a list of requests funded with a $10,550 grant this year:

  • Tumbling equipment
  • Basketballs
  • After prom activities, food, entertainment
  • Volleyball iPad and pencil
  • FlashForge 3D printer
  • Trap team supplies
  • Lower Sioux Agency field trip
  • Summer rec T-shirts
  • Child care for adult basic education
  • Recess equipment
  • Flexible seats

That’s just part of the $185,000 granted since 2009, plus an endowment fund of nearly $200,000 for future needs!

Kendra Peterson joined the board of the MACCRAY 2180 Foundation in 2019 and currently serves as board chair. She lives in Clara City and is a MACCRAY High School graduate herself (Go Wolverines!). Kendra said the foundation has had a great impact on the students at MACCRAY, providing grant funding for a variety of different needs that otherwise would have been left unfunded. These have included alternative seating for classrooms, new library books, recreational equipment for athletics and classroom learning, and field trips to name a few.

“Our work is important because we have been able to provide enhanced learning experiences for our students. Our community has been very supportive of our foundation, showing up for our annual meal fundraiser, bidding on our online auction or gifting other donations throughout the year,” Kendra said.

MACCRAY 2180 Foundation is one of Southwest Initiative Foundation’s (SWIF) fund partners. Through the partnership, local advisory board members fundraise and direct grants while SWIF staff process gifts, offer training and provide the legal tax structure to make local donations tax deductible. We host more than 120 different funds designated to make a difference in communities across our region.
