A number of recent experiences have left me with that “Wow!” feeling again. I’ve spent a lot of time on the road recently—connecting with colleagues across the U.S. attending the Council on Foundation’s community foundation conference in San Diego, introducing a speaker at the Animal Science Venture Forum in Willmar, hosting new Southwest Minnesota State University President Connie Gorres on a tour of the southern half of our southwest Minnesota regional community. When I arrived back at the office last week, I could hardly sit still as I was so energized from all these great opportunities!
I had so many great conversations and continue to learn so many new things. Here are a few things I just can’t stop thinking about:
- Connecting with fellow community foundation colleagues is always special. One of the speakers really challenged us to think about our role. He told us community foundations are really about “comforting the afflicted and afflicting the comfortable.” How does that translate for Southwest Initiative Foundation’s mission, to be a catalyst and challenge our regional leaders?
- Speakers at the Animal Science Venture Forum were fabulous. I am so aware of the tension of feeding the world versus producing for local food. What does southwest Minnesota have that the world needs? Food!
- Visiting with President Gorres during our travels and introducing her to some of the most innovative and committed regional leaders was amazing. I am so excited to see how her leadership will strengthen SMSU and our entire region. How are we preparing our youth to be successful? Are we sharing what southwest Minnesota can offer them?
I would love to hear your feedback on these ideas. These are questions we need to tackle together!
