The sudden closure of local newspapers in Hutchinson and Litchfield is a significant loss for our communities, and we share the concern of many area residents about the future of local news.
About the closures
The Hutchinson Leader and the Litchfield Independent Review have announced they will cease operations April 28. The Weekend Leader Shopper, Meeker County Advertiser and the Crow River Press printing business also will close. The final edition of the newspapers will be Wednesday, April 24.
The Leader, Independent Review and Crow River Press — collectively known as Crow River Media — as well as sister newspapers in the southwest metropolitan area, are owned by MediaNews Group, a Denver-based media company, which also owns the Saint Paul Pioneer Press.
The Leader was founded in 1880, and the Litchfield Independent Review was founded in 1876.
Importance of local news
A strong local press is foundational to a healthy democracy. Local newspapers provide vital information about our community, holding institutions accountable and fostering civic engagement. They also tell the stories about our neighbors that help us all build a shared sense of belonging. Their absence creates an information gap that can leave residents feeling disconnected and uninformed.
The foundation’s role
Southwest Initiative Foundation is committed to supporting vibrant and welcoming communities. We are currently engaged in conversations with community members, local journalists and nonprofit colleagues to explore solutions for the future of local news. Unfortunately, there are no easy answers, and the path forward will require collaboration across sectors.
How you can get involved
- Support existing local news outlets. Subscribe, donate and advertise with local publications and journalists.
- Share your voice. Let local leaders know how important local news is to you. Attend city council meetings or write to your representatives.
- Explore alternative models. Research and participate in community discussions about new avenues for local journalism, such as non-profit newsrooms or collaborative efforts.

Statewide effort to strengthen local news
Our partners at the McKnight Foundation recently announced the establishment of Press Forward Minnesota, a local chapter of a national movement to strengthen communities by reinvigorating local news. Press Forward Minnesota will be focused exclusively on funding journalism efforts across our state. This five-year initiative will be focused on bringing more resources to the field of local journalism in Minnesota and strengthening the infrastructure and collaboration required to build a durable news and information ecosystem statewide.
