How do you see southwest Minnesota? Through your eyes—and camera lens—you can show us!
We’re looking for photographs that capture the spirit, beauty and diversity of southwest Minnesota as a way to celebrate our upcoming 30th Anniversary.
This contest is open to professional and amateur photographers. Photographers do not need to reside in southwest Minnesota, but photos must be taken in our region.

Why join the contest?
If you’re in the photography business (or even thinking about it), it just makes sense. Get your name and work in front of thousands of people in southwest Minnesota and beyond.
If you take photos more for fun, this is a fantastic way to foster your creativity and share some of your favorite southwest Minnesota people and places.

- Selected images will be displayed at our 30th anniversary banquet Thursday, April 28 at Prairie’s Edge Convention Center near Granite Falls.
- Your photo(s) will be featured throughout the 2016 celebration year on our website, social media and in print.
- One lucky photographer will also win a special prairie photography package!
Photo criteria
- Photo must be taken in our 18-county southwest Minnesota region: Big Stone, Chippewa, Cottonwood, Jackson, Kandiyohi, Lac qui Parle, Lincoln, Lyon, McLeod, Meeker, Murray, Nobles, Pipestone, Redwood, Renville, Rock, Swift, and Yellow Medicine counties
- There’s no date limit for when the photo was taken
- Photos can be black/white or color
- Photos must be high resolution .jpeg files (preferably 300 dpi), sorry but we will not accept printed photos
- You may enter multiple photos, but please remember that judges will select multiple winners from throughout the region
- Photographer must allow SWIF usage rights to publish and distribute the photo in print and online.
Selection process
- A SWIF committee will select photos for our banquet display.
- Selections will be made to represent all areas of our region.
- Selections will be made to show a variety of subject matter.
- Selections will be made based on composition, artistic merit and overall impact.
- Preference will be given to photographers who reside in or have a strong connection to southwest Minnesota.
How to submit your photos
Upload your photos to our Hightail page and include the following information in the message portion:
Name
Address
Phone number
Email address
Location of photograph
Title/description of photo and your connection to southwest Minnesota may also be included.
By submitting your photo, you agree to our photo usage rights. If your photos include people, you are responsible for ensuring proper release forms.
