Laura Curtiss wears many hats in life. She serves as our Grants and Operations Assistant in addition to being a devoted mom, a supportive sister, a grateful daughter, an enthusiastic follower and an ambitious dreamer. Each of these roles allows her to demonstrate leadership in unique and meaningful ways. Laura is also part of the current cohort of McLeod For Tomorrow’s leadership program.
Tell us who you are and what leadership means to you.
As a mother, I am deeply fulfilled by the opportunity to nurture my children and support them in their journey to discover and become the best versions of themselves. I strive to create an environment where they feel safe to explore their interests, ask questions, and learn from their experiences. I encourage them to develop resilience and compassion, teaching them that mistakes are valuable lessons on the path to growth.
As a sister, I take pride in being a reliable confidante for my brothers. I listen attentively to their concerns, offer advice when needed and help them navigate challenges. I believe that strong communication and empathy are essential in fostering healthy relationships, and I work to ensure that they know they can always count on me for support.
As a daughter, I deeply appreciate my mother’s unwavering love and dedication. I celebrate not only her achievements but also the countless sacrifices she has made for our family. I strive to honor her legacy by embodying the same qualities of kindness and perseverance that she has instilled in me.
As a follower, I actively pursue my own passions, which in turn enables me to lift others up. Whether it’s collaborating on community projects or simply cheering on friends in their pursuits, I find fulfillment in helping others discover their potential. This role reminds me that leadership isn’t always about being in the spotlight; sometimes, it’s about contributing to a greater cause.
As a dreamer, I constantly push myself to reach for the stars and transform what others may deem impossible into reality. I set ambitious goals and take calculated risks, understanding that innovation often arises from courage and creativity. I believe that dreaming big not only empowers me but also inspires those around me to envision their own possibilities.
Ultimately, I view leadership as embodying multiple facets, employing diverse methods of guidance, and acting with the intention to uplift others. A true leader selflessly prioritizes the growth of others, helping them ascend to the peak of their potential. Leaders provide direction while also recognizing when it’s necessary to challenge the status quo or bend the rules for the sake of the greater good, all the while fostering an environment where everyone can thrive.

What motivates you to overcome challenges in working toward your leadership goals?
My primary motivation in life is my children; they are the driving force that inspires me to rise each morning, even on days when I feel exhausted or lack the usual spark of motivation. Each day, I remind myself that my actions and efforts are not just for my own benefit but for their future. I firmly believe that our children are a reflection of who we are, and this belief instills in me a deep sense of responsibility. I want to be a role model for them, teaching them values like resilience, compassion, and the importance of always striving for personal growth.
There are several ambitious goals I aspire to achieve throughout my life. Among them is the desire to further my education and create a stable and nurturing environment for my family. However, the pursuit of these aspirations is not without its challenges. I constantly face obstacles, including language barriers that sometimes prevent me from fully expressing my thoughts and feelings, as well as cultural differences that can create a sense of isolation. Additionally, I grapple with my own fears and biases, which can hinder my ability to embrace new opportunities and experiences. Despite these challenges, I remain committed to overcoming them, as I want to show my children the importance of perseverance and the pursuit of one’s dreams.
Share your future goals for your community and your role within it.
I find myself contemplating the uncertainties of the future, yet I strive to create a space where individuals can learn from one another’s unique talents and skills—be it netting, cooking, painting, or other pursuits. I envision a welcoming environment for youth, one that is inclusive of all religions, social statuses, and sporting activities, where they can come together to share experiences and collaborate on projects that promote creativity and personal growth or simply to enjoy being a kid. This is especially important during the chilly days of winter or the sweltering days of summer. My goal is to facilitate meaningful connections among community members and offer various opportunities for mentorship, skill-building, and collective problem-solving. Through these efforts, I hope to contribute to the development of a strong, interconnected community that empowers everyone to thrive.
What advice would you give a leader who is just getting started?

For everyone embarking on their journey toward leadership, my advice is to approach each day as if it were the first. Embrace the opportunity to make mistakes, as it’s a natural part of being human. Strive to do your best each day but also practice self-compassion and avoid being too hard on yourself. Celebrate every achievement, even if no one is watching. Take pride in your successes without diminishing others and always remember to treat others as you wish to be treated.
