At our recent nonprofit and fund partner conference, attendees came together to learn, connect, and share ideas to strengthen the nonprofit sector across Southwest Minnesota. Woven into the day was something extra to make the day even more meaningful: a chance for two attendees to make an immediate difference for neighbors in our region by directing a $1,000 grant to a Southwest Minnesota nonprofit of their choice.
Investing in Access and Opportunity

The first grant, directed by Meranda Wacek, was awarded to Equul Access, located between Glencoe and Hutchinson. This organization is dedicated to creating inclusive opportunities and expanding access for individuals of all abilities through equine-assisted activities and programs. Their work helps individuals build confidence, improve well-being, and experience a sense of belonging.
“These grant dollars will go towards horse care, which is our biggest expense, but necessary to keep our horses healthy so that they can continue to do the important work of helping people. I’m truly grateful for the support,” Marsha Anderson, founder and executive director of Equul Access, said.
Championing Arts and Community Innovation

The second grant, directed by Tony Bormann, was awarded to the Madison Art & Innovation Center (also known as the Madison Mercantile) in Madison. This vibrant community hub is focused on bringing people together through arts, creativity, and collaboration by providing space and programming that sparks innovation, celebrates local talent, and strengthens the cultural fabric of the Madison area.
“I’m always amazed by the generosity of people who believe in Madison and the importance of community. These grants dollars will be used to continue the important programming that happens here, which ultimately strengthens our community and makes everyone feel welcome,” Kris Shelstad, founder of the Madison Arts & Innovation Center, said.
Celebrating 40 Years
As we celebrate 40 years of serving the region, moments like these feel especially meaningful. They remind us that the strength of Southwest Minnesota lies not just in organizations, but in the people who believe in them.
We are more grateful than ever for the nonprofits that lift up our communities every day. And we are just as grateful for the individuals who choose to support them, sometimes in ways as simple as saying, “I know where this can make a difference.”
Are you wondering how you can make a difference? Make a gift in support of our mission so we can continue investing in people and programs that strengthen connection, promote well‑being, and help communities across Southwest Minnesota thrive.
