Dec. 29, 2008 – Dayna Remmel Latham Named KMS Early Childhood Initiative Coordinator
Latham will lead local coalition in partnership with Southwest Initiative Foundation
Dayna Remmel Latham of Kerkhoven has been named the local coalition coordinator for the Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg (KMS) School District Early Childhood Initiative (ECI). The KMS ECI began last September in partnership with the Southwest Initiative Foundation (SWIF) to ensure that the area’s youngest children have what they need for a strong start to a healthy, productive life. The goal is to bring together parents, caregivers, nonprofits, government agencies, businesses, schools and others to create a supportive network for young children ages birth to 5 and their families.
During the next six to eight months, SWIF will assist Latham in leading volunteers through a grassroots community organizing process to establish the local coalition and create a vision for action and strategic plan. The coalition recently completed a Community Profile Survey to collect input about community assets and needs connected to early childhood care, education and resources. The results will be shared at a Jan. 5 community meeting at KMS
High School.
Latham most recently served as executive director for Heartland Ranch Inc. in Benson where she oversaw general operations and program evaluations, developed collaborations with key stakeholders and advocated for at-risk youth on a local and state level. She has been active with the Blandin Foundation Community Action Leadership Program, Minnesota Association of County Probation Officers, Minnesota Corrections Association, Minnesota Council on Child Caring Agencies and Minnesota Social Services Association. Other volunteer involvement includes Minnesota 4-H and the KMS Integration Collaboration Team.
“I have worked for 18 years in the field of corrections and the common thread for many is a struggle or failure in the educational system,” Latham said. “If kids are prepared for kindergarten and the early education experience is fun and rewarding, they engage in school and it helps prepare them for their futures. We have a wonderful education system in KMS. If we invest in early childhood and our youngest community members, we are not only helping improve children’s lives, we are investing in our future.”
The KMS ECI joins 78 other ECI communities that are part of the statewide Minnesota Early Childhood Initiative, including 13 southwest Minnesota ECI coalitions operating in partnership with the Southwest Initiative Foundation. By being part of a larger initiative, the KMS ECI will be able to draw upon the collective support and expertise of others and have a stronger voice in public policy and early childhood issues locally, regionally and statewide.
Contact Dayna Remmel Latham at 320-264-1617 for more information or to become involved in KMS ECI.

Dec. 29, 2008 – McLeod County Thrive Action Team to Host Jan. 12 Early Childhood Mental Health Trainings for Community Professionals
Assistant Commissioner of Minnesota Dept. of Health and Human Services Dr. Read Sulik to present
Childcare providers, public health staff, early childhood and special education educators, school administrators, higher education and human services professionals are invited to attend an educational session with presenter and assistant commissioner of Minnesota Dept. of Health and Human Services Dr. Read Sulik to better understand how their work with young children impacts a child’s social and emotional development. The session is set for 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., Monday, Jan. 12, at the Hutchinson Event Center.
There is no cost to participants but space is limited. Pre-registration is required. Deadline for registering is Jan. 5 or until session is full. For more information or to register contact McLeod County Action Team Coordinator Tari Niemeyer at [email protected] or 320-234-8540.
This session will provide participants with an overview of early childhood mental health and include lessons on brain development, child temperament, self-regulation, attachment and behavior, as well as the most common mental health problems in children including anxiety, depression and attention and behavior disorders. Dr. Sulik will not provide any individual consultations to participants.
Prior to his recent appointment to the Dept. of Health and Human Services, Dr. Sulik served as Medical Director of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry of St. Cloud Hospital Behavioral Health Services. Dr. Sulik is involved in numerous community-based interdisciplinary and advocacy projects in Central Minnesota and speaks regionally and nationally on child and youth related mental health issues and on models of integrating mental health and primary care.
Similar trainings are being conducted throughout the state through funding support provided by the Medica Foundation and Minnesota Initiative Foundations, including the Southwest Initiative Foundation (SWIF). Trainings are hosted by the Minnesota Thrive Initiative Action Teams which promote healthy social and emotional development of young children ages birth to 5 by strengthening local resources and support networks.
“One of the goals of the local McLeod County Thrive Action Team is to increase knowledge across community sectors to support the social emotional well-being of young children,” said SWIF Program Officer Sara Carlson. “We are pleased to be able to make this important educational opportunity available to the people who work with young children and families.”

Loan proceeds will help cover the cost of training, product purchase and some additional working capital to market the new services. The new location provides retail space for their personally designed giftware and art, as well as candles, decorations, candies and gluten-free food products.

Oct. 14, 2008 – Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg School District to Start New Early Childhood Coalition through Partnership with Southwest Initiative Foundation
Interested community members encouraged to attend initial meeting Oct. 30 in Kerkhoven
A new early childhood coalition initiated by the Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg (KMS) School District and the Southwest Initiative Foundation (SWIF) is forming to ensure that the area’s youngest children have a strong start to a healthy life.
The KMS Early Childhood Initiative (ECI) will bring together parents, caregivers, nonprofits, government agencies, businesses, schools and others to create a supportive network for children ages birth to 5 and their families. The coalition works to strengthen services, connect resources and fill gaps that might prevent a child from thriving.
SWIF will provide KMS with organizing expertise to establish the local coalition, lead an approximate eight month process and assist in creating a vision and strategic plan. Grant resources will be available to secure local leadership and implement the plan during the three-year SWIF partnership.
Interested community members are encouraged to join a dinner at 5:30 p.m. and initial meeting from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 30, in the KMS High School Commons in Kerkhoven. Contact SWIF Program Officer Sara Carlson at 800-594-9480 or [email protected] to RSVP or for more information.
“Research consistently shows that the best investment in the future prosperity of the nation is in early childhood care and education,” Carlson said. “We want to help children in the KMS communities reach their full potential. We want them to be ready to do their best in school and become contributing citizens. Everyone who shares this idea is welcome at the ECI coalition table.”

Sept. 29, 2008 – Rock County Initiates New Early Childhood Coalition through Partnership with Southwest Initiative Foundation
Interested community members encouraged to attend initial meeting Oct. 8 in Luverne
A new early childhood coalition in Rock County is forming to make sure that the area’s youngest children have what they need for a strong start to a healthy, productive life. The Rock County Early Childhood Initiative (ECI) will bring together parents, caregivers, nonprofits, government agencies, businesses, schools and others to create a supportive network for young children ages birth to 5 and their families. By connecting resources, the coalition works to strengthen services and identify and fill any gaps that might prevent a child from thriving.
The Southwest Initiative Foundation (SWIF) will bring an established, grassroots community organizing model to Rock County to establish the local coalition. SWIF staff will lead this six to eight month process and assist local members in creating a vision for action and strategic plan. Grant resources will be made available to the local team to secure local leadership and begin implementing their plan over the course of the three year partnership with SWIF.
“More and more studies show that the best investment we can make in the future prosperity of the nation is in early childhood care and education,” said SWIF Program Officer Sara Carlson. “We want to help each child in Rock County reach his or her full potential. We want them to be ready to do their best in school and learn to become upstanding, contributing citizens. Anyone who shares this idea is welcome at the ECI coalition table—there is always room for a new member.”
Community members who wish to participate in the coalition are encouraged to join the initial meeting from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 8, in the Rock County Community Library basement at 201 W. Main St. in Luverne. Contact Sara Carlson at 800-594-9480 or [email protected] to RSVP or for more information.

This initiative is a collaboration of the six Minnesota Initiative Foundations (MIFs) of Greater Minnesota, including SWIF. By being part of a larger initiative, the Rock County ECI will be able to draw upon the collective support and expertise of others and have a stronger voice in public policy and early childhood issues locally, regionally and statewide.

Today, as innovative new coalitions are announced, it is encouraging to see sustained action toward public engagement and policy changes that will ensure Minnesota’s youngest receive the kind of care and education they need, to prepare them for success in school and in later life.”

Aug. 20, 2008 – Openings still available for Youth Energy Summit (YES!)
Southwest Initiative Foundation, Prairie Woods Environmental Learning Center launch new season
Openings are still available for up to six youth teams to join the 2008-09 Youth Energy Summit (YES!).
YES!, a program of Prairie Woods Environmental Learning Center (PWELC) in Spicer and the Southwest Initiative Foundation (SWIF), uses hands-on education and energy action projects to address energy opportunities and issues in southwest and west central Minnesota communities.
Energy issues have emerged as a top priority around the world. In local communities, YES! provides real opportunities for youth to engage and take positive action on energy issues. Throughout their school year, teams consisting of students in grades 8 through 12 and their adult advisors increase their knowledge on renewable energy, climate change issues, conservation and energy resources. Teams choose energy action projects that encourage them to think critically about how energy affects their communities. Through their projects, they interact with leaders and each other to find solutions.
The YES! kick-off is set for Sept. 23 at PWELC in Spicer. A public event on Nov. 10 in Willmar will feature music, inspiration and messages from YES! youth. Teams will come together again in February for a winter workshop. The program culminates around Earth Day in April 2009 with awards for outstanding energy action projects.
“We are very excited to launch the second season of YES!,” SWIF Program Specialist Cheryl Glaeser said. “More than 125 students representing 11 communities participated last year. This season will be even better as we fine-tune the program to help students engage their communities and keep their teams together.”
SWIF is offering up to $500 per team to offset costs and will contribute grants totaling $10,000 toward YES! community action projects.
Schools, communities, churches or other organizations interested in forming a team can register at www.prairiewoodselc.org/YES.html or contact PWELC Environmental Education Coordinator Anne Dybsetter, 320-354-5894, or SWIF Program Specialist Cheryl Glaeser at 1-800-594-9480 for more information.

February 29, 2008 – Advisory Board of Lismore Area Community Foundation Seated on Wednesday
LISMORE, Minn. – The Lismore Area Community Foundation (LACF) has been organizing through a steering committee process, with leadership from the Southwest Initiative Foundation, for the past ten months. On Wednesday evening, the LACF seated its permanent advisory board.
Advisory board members include: Cliff Altman, Jared Hinsch, Jim Weidert, Joyce Erdman, Roxanne Kemper, Troy Loosbrock, and Troy Veld. Altman, Weidert, Erdman, Loosbrock, and Veld all previously served as steering committee members, while Hinsch and Kemper are brand new to LACF.
The new, permanent advisory board’s role is to provide leadership and uphold the vision of LACF, whose mission is to “act as a catalyst to facilitate charitable giving and to reinvest in opportunities that improve the quality of life and economy for the people of the Lismore area.” In addition, board members will oversee the day-to-day operations of the Foundation, work to identify projects for immediate funding and fundraising, and continue building the visibility of LACF.
Earlier this year, the Lismore Cooperative Telephone Company (LCTC) initiated the creation of a community foundation, through the Southwest Initiative Foundation, for the Lismore area as a way to capture local charitable resources and enhance the vitality of the community and area. To jumpstart the fundraising and impact of the Lismore Area Community Foundation, the telephone company recently made a $50,000 gift to the Community Foundation’s endowment fund. The gift represented a portion of the company’s earnings from a local investment, and LCTC has continued to pledge a portion of those earnings annually to the community foundation.
With $25,000 in matching funds from the Southwest Initiative Foundation, the Lismore Area Community Foundation endowment fund has quickly grown to over $75,000 in just six months, and grant distributions from those earnings will be made to the Lismore area in the fall of 2008 to help meet community needs.
For more information about the Lismore Area Community Foundation and to share your ideas with the new advisory board, please contact Liz Maiers, SWIF development officer, at 1-800-594-9480 or [email protected].

January 8, 2008 – New London Selected to Participate in SWIF’s Connected Communities Partnership
The Southwest Initiative Foundation (SWIF) has selected New London to be the second pilot community for its brand new Connected Communities Partnership (CCP) program. CCP is a community development and leadership program designed to bring leaders and citizens together to identify and prioritize community opportunities based on existing assets that will result in future growth and improvement.
CCP communities, including New London, begin their work with SWIF by recruiting community members to serve as advisors, leaders, and participants. A small advisor team will be formed to serve as a resource and connector to SWIF, the community and the core leadership team. Through an open application process, citizens may apply for a volunteer leadership position on the 20-member core leadership team. Members of the core team must be fully committed to the work of the program which includes four work sessions and community organizing activities within a six to nine month time frame. An action team will be formed later to implement projects identified in the action plan.
“We are pleased to launch the pilot in New London,” said Judy Larson, program director at the Foundation, “and we are eager to work alongside of New London’s talented leaders and citizens. We will guide and coach the community along but the real work and commitment belongs with the community.” CCP aims to achieve high-impact outcomes and change at individual, team and community levels, with an emphasis on community change. High-impact change has a substantial effect on the quality of life offered by the community and is easily recognized by both existing residents and potential newcomers.
SWIF launched its first CCP pilot in Montevideo in the fall of 2007, and its second pilot in New London in early 2008. A new community will be selected to be the third CCP community in the fall of 2008. For more information, contact Judy Larson, SWIF program director, at [email protected] or (800) 594-9480.
