Local community leaders and volunteers reflect on Welcoming Week

Beyond CCS, Abdifatah engages with broader community events like Welcoming Week in Willmar and the International Heritage Festival, which celebrate diversity and strengthen connections in the community. His work focuses on creating spaces where everyone feels included and supported.
I wanted to be part of planning Welcoming Week in my community because I believe in the power of inclusion and the importance of creating spaces where everyone feels they belong. Willmar is a diverse community, and Welcoming Week is a unique opportunity to bring people from different backgrounds together, celebrate our shared humanity, and foster a sense of unity. It aligns with my work at Community Connector Services, where our mission is to promote community integration and empower marginalized groups. By helping to plan this event, I hoped to create meaningful connections between residents, raise awareness about the contributions of immigrants, and build a stronger, more cohesive community.
My favorite moment from this year’s Welcoming Week was the cultural performances. Watching different community members showcase their traditions through music and dance was incredibly powerful. What I loved most was how the performances brought people together—everyone, no matter their background, was engaged and cheering each other on. It was a beautiful celebration of diversity and unity, with each act telling its own unique story while contributing to the shared atmosphere of joy. That sense of connection and mutual respect really stood out to me, and it highlighted how events like Welcoming Week can bring our community closer.
Welcoming Week can make a positive impact on our community by creating an inclusive environment where everyone feels seen, valued, and respected. It provides a platform for residents from diverse backgrounds to connect, celebrate their cultures, and learn from one another. This kind of engagement breaks down barriers, reduces misunderstandings, and fosters a greater sense of unity. By highlighting the contributions of immigrants and refugees, Welcoming Week also promotes empathy and builds stronger relationships across cultural lines. In the long term, it helps create a more cohesive, resilient community where diversity is not just acknowledged but celebrated as a strength.
