Did you take advantage of the great outdoor activities southwest Minnesota has to offer this summer? I’m happy to say that I did and enjoyed every minute of it!
At the end of August, my husband Bruce and I closed out summer by taking an RV to visit family and friends. We had a great time taking in the Ortonville area and especially enjoyed biking along the trails with former board chair Becky Parker and her husband Jerry.
While biking, we came across a beautiful sculpture by local artist and good friend Doug Holtquist, who now lives in Connecticut. The marker notes it represents the changing look of rural families. I can just picture the family that might be seated in this portrait—and it probably looks quite different than many farm families today. I loved how this unexpected artwork got me thinking about today’s agriculture in a different way.
I cover miles and miles (and miles!) of our regional community each year, but I’m still struck by the many things I learn and the “hidden gems” that others share with me. I hope you take the time to not only look for ways to enjoy our area, but also remember to share what you love about southwest Minnesota with people who can also learn and appreciate it. I hear so often that people don’t know what we have to offer…so let’s tell them!
What was one of your favorite summer activities in the region?
