Janice Nelson
12 Years of Service
Janice is an attorney with the firm of Nelson Oyen Torvik, P.L.L.P. in Montevideo where she concentrates on real estate, estate planning, elder law and probate, as well as serving as the Montevideo city attorney. For the past 12 years, Janice has served on the Southwest Initiative Foundation Board of Directors.
Janice has provided extensive leadership on our board, guiding major changes to a growing organization. She chaired our board in 2018-2019, leading Southwest Initiative Foundation into its next phase of Grow Our Own. She also served as past chair, vice chair and treasurer. She chaired the Audit and Finance, Farmland, and Governance and Nominating committees and led strategic direction as a member of the Spending Policy, Core Values and Capital Investment task forces.
Bringing rigor to the foundation’s policies, procedures and overall governance, Janice led a complex organization to $100 million in assets and a new level of sophistication, which included updating our by-laws. She remained grounded, thoughtful and pragmatic about ensuring we are able to carry out the commitments we make. She has been committed to supporting her local foundation and southwest Minnesota region as a member of our Growing Home Circle.
As a respected attorney, employer, grandmother and care giver, Janice has provided incredible insights to our work. Janice brings professionalism, an authentic curiosity and genuine care for the foundation’s work and team, making people feel valued as we fulfill our mission.
We’re grateful to Janice for her leadership and service in southwest Minnesota!
