At Southwest Initiative Foundation, we like to use the term “leaving your legacy” to describe someone who shares his or her values with future generations through a planned outright or deferred estate gift given in perpetuity. In essence, the gift lives on to perpetuate the influence of the donor’s life.
Estate gifts may be to our SWIF General Endowment to meet the needs of future generations, or they may be designated to benefit a home community, county, specific nonprofit organizations or causes important to you.
Legacy Circle members give beyond earned income to include giving from their estate. And, their giving goes beyond wills, as the dictionary describes, to include one or more of the following gift methods:
- Outright gifts of money or appreciated assets (during lifetime)
- Revocable Living Trusts
- Life Insurance Policies (new or existing)
- Retained Life Estates (home or farmland)
- Charitable Remainder Trusts (for retirement income)
- Retirement Fund Assets (to avoid income tax)
- Charitable Lead Trusts (to avoid estate tax)
- Charitable Gift Annuities (for more retirement income)
It is important for us to honor and thank Legacy Circle members during their lifetime for their thoughtful estate gifts. Please share your legacy plans with us so we may invite you and your family to our next Legacy Circle event.
In addition to knowing the type of legacy gift you are planning, knowing what you want your legacy gift to accomplish is equally important. For example, by using estate-planning charitable alternatives, you can often provide tax-wise savings, pass more of your estate for heirs and leave bequests to your favorite charities.
