About a year and a half ago, we started our Early Childhood Dental Network-SW. Our goal is to improve awareness, education and access to oral health for kids age birth to 5.
We know that tooth decay is the most prevalent chronic childhood disease. It can impact a child’s growing, learning, speaking, school performance and behavior. If left untreated, chronic tooth problems can lead to issues as an adult as well. It’s been linked to heart disease and diabetes.
But, there is good news! It’s preventable. If children can access care, we can address those issues right away.
Another challenge, however, is that there are only about 116 licensed dentists in our southwest Minnesota region. It can be very hard to get children an appointment, especially for those on public insurance plans, and many dentists don’t see young children.
One way we’re helping is by bringing in mobile dental units. We’re also hosting learning sessions around the region, so check out our calendar if you want to get involved.
